PUBLIC SAFETY Act

To allocate funds for the local law enforcement grant programs, and for other purposes.

Introduced Jan 14, 2026

Latest action (Jan 14, 2026) Read twice and referred to the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.

Summary

This bill redirects federal funding from immigration enforcement to local law enforcement grant programs by amending existing law. It reallocates funding to the COPS Hiring Program, which provides grants to local police departments, with funds available through September 30, 2030. The bill waives certain regulatory requirements for smaller jurisdictions and tribal governments that employ fewer than 175 law enforcement officers. Additionally, the bill appropriates $45 billion for the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program for fiscal year 2025, with those funds remaining available through September 30, 2029.
