Local Law Enforcement Support Act of 2026
To expand funding opportunities for local law enforcement, and for other purposes.
Summary
The Local Law Enforcement Support Act of 2026 expands the eligible uses for federal law enforcement grant funding under the Byrne JAG Program and COPS program to include new categories of expenses. The bill adds support for recruiting, hiring, training, and retaining law enforcement personnel; acquiring protective equipment; and combating digital crimes through digital forensics equipment and cyber investigation capabilities. It also authorizes funding for drone and counter-drone law enforcement operations, and for forensic technology and investigative equipment including ballistics analysis tools compatible with the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network, rapid DNA instruments, video analytics software, and open-source intelligence analysis tools. Additionally, the bill allows funding to enhance communication with and provide services to victims of violent crime. These expanded funding categories apply to grants distributed through the Byrne JAG and COPS programs to local law enforcement agencies.
