To give priority consideration to units of local government that provide gang affiliation information in reports to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for the purpose of Byrne-JAG grants, and for other purposes.
Summary
This bill amends federal law governing Byrne Justice Assistance Grants (JAG), a major federal grant program that provides funding to state and local law enforcement agencies. The bill directs that priority consideration be given to units of local government that report information about gang-related offenses to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National Gang Intelligence Center. By prioritizing jurisdictions that provide gang affiliation information in their reports to federal authorities, the bill aims to incentivize more comprehensive gang-related crime reporting at the local level. The legislation does not create new reporting requirements but rather creates a preference in grant awards for jurisdictions that already report gang-related offense information. This change is intended to improve federal data on gang violence and support law enforcement coordination efforts to address gang-related crime.
