Enhancing COPS Hiring Program Grants for Local Law Enforcement Act
To amend the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 to authorize law enforcement agencies to use COPS grants to recruit and retain law enforcement officers.
Summary
This bill would authorize law enforcement agencies to use COPS grants to provide bonuses for recruiting and retaining police officers. The bonuses would be available to agencies experiencing a decline in officer recruitment or a high rate of officer retirements or resignations. The bill amends the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 to add this new authorized use for grant funds. It also establishes a definition of "law enforcement officer" for purposes of the grant program.
