Myakka Wild and Scenic River Act of 2025

To amend the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act to designate the portion of the Myakka River lying within Sarasota County, Florida as a component of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System, and for other purposes.

Introduced Jan 23, 2025

Latest action (Jan 23, 2025) Referred to the House Committee on Natural Resources.

Summary

This bill designates approximately 34 miles of the Myakka River in Sarasota County, Florida as a component of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System, divided into eight segments classified as scenic, wild, or recreational river designations. The bill assigns the Secretary of the Interior to administer the designated segments in partnership with the Myakka River Management Coordinating Council, a state-established council representing state and local agencies, landowners, and nonprofits. The Secretary is authorized to enter into cooperative agreements with Florida state agencies and local governments for management, and the existing comprehensive management plan developed by the Council is deemed to satisfy federal requirements. Land acquisition is limited to donation or acquisition with owner consent, with no condemnation authority, and the designation does not make the river part of the National Park System or change how publicly or privately owned lands within the watershed are managed by existing authorities.
