Merchant Marine-Railroad Retirement Correction Act of 1998
To amend the Railroad Retirement Act of 1974 to assure that merchant marine service during World War II that the Secretary of Veterans Affairs deems to be active military duty by reason of a determination by the Secretary of Defense is considered to be creditable service in the computation of retirement benefits to the same degree as other active duty service, and for other purposes.
Summary
This bill amends the Railroad Retirement Act of 1974 to allow World War II merchant marine service to be credited toward railroad retirement benefits. The change applies specifically to merchant marine service that the Secretary of Veterans Affairs determines to be active military duty under existing Department of Defense criteria. When merchant marine service qualifies as active duty under these standards, it will be treated the same as other active military service for purposes of computing railroad retirement benefits. The amendment is effective for months beginning after the bill's enactment.
