To amend title 23, United States Code, to include school bus route safety in the safe routes to school program, and for other purposes.
Summary
The bill expands the Safe Routes to School program to include school bus route safety. It authorizes federal funding for infrastructure improvements along school bus routes, such as sidewalk improvements, traffic calming measures, pedestrian crossing improvements, and bus stop waiting areas. The bill also allows funding for non-infrastructure activities to promote safe school bus ridership, including public awareness campaigns, traffic education and enforcement, and student safety instruction. Safe routes to school infrastructure projects are added to the Highway Safety Improvement Program.
