Fishing Industry Safety, Health, and Wellness Improvement Act of 2025
To amend the Fishing Safety Training Grants and Fishing Safety Research Grant programs.
Summary
This bill amends existing federal programs to expand the scope and funding for fishing industry safety initiatives. It would broaden the Fishing Safety Training Grants program to include training on behavioral and physical health risks, including substance use disorder and worker fatigue, for fishing vessel operators and crew members. It would similarly expand the Fishing Safety Research Grant program to include research on understanding and mitigating these behavioral and physical health risks in the commercial fishing industry. The bill would increase annual funding for both grant programs from $3 million to $6 million annually for fiscal years 2025 through 2029, with funds administered by the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Grant criteria would be developed in consultation with the Coast Guard Commandant.
