Summary

This bill prohibits the importation of live nonhuman primates into the United States, except for primates imported by and for placement in facilities accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Importers of primates to AZA-accredited facilities must certify that the animals will not be used in experiments, testing, or breeding for such purposes. U.S. Customs and Border Protection will enforce the prohibition by denying clearance for shipments containing nonhuman primates that violate the law. Violators may face civil penalties of up to $50,000 per violation, and any illegally imported primates are subject to forfeiture.
