Rural America Health Corps Act

To establish a demonstration program to provide payments on eligible loans for individuals who are eligible for the National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program.

Introduced Feb 7, 2025

Latest action (Feb 7, 2025) Referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.

Summary

The bill would establish a demonstration program allowing the Department of Health and Human Services to provide loan repayment assistance to health professionals who commit to working in rural health professional shortage areas. Eligible individuals would work under a five-year service agreement, with the department paying one-fifth of the principal and interest on their eligible loans for each year of service, with the remainder paid upon completion of the fifth year, capped at $200,000 per individual. Participants would comply with the requirements of the existing National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program but would not participate in that program itself. The bill authorizes $50 million annually for fiscal years 2026 through 2030 and requires evaluation of the program's effects on rural health care access within five years.
