To reinforce the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act of 1977 by establishing a limitations period of 10 years for antibribery offenses, and for other purposes.
Summary
This bill establishes a 10-year statute of limitations for prosecuting antibribery offenses under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act of 1977 and related provisions of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. The standard federal statute of limitations for most crimes is 5 years, but this bill extends the deadline for prosecutors to bring charges in these particular corruption cases to 10 years after the offense is committed. The extended statute of limitations applies only to offenses committed after the bill is enacted and does not apply retroactively to offenses committed more than 5 years before the law takes effect. The bill includes a sunset provision and expires 8 years after enactment.
