Undersea Cable Protection Act of 2025
To amend the National Marine Sanctuaries Act to prohibit requiring an authorization for the installation, continued presence, operation, maintenance, repair, or recovery of undersea fiber optic cables in a national marine sanctuary if such activities have previously been authorized by a Federal or State agency.
Summary
The bill modifies the National Marine Sanctuaries Act to streamline approval processes for undersea fiber optic cables in national marine sanctuaries. If a federal or state agency has already issued a license, lease, or permit for installing or operating such cables, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration cannot require additional authorization. The prohibition applies to the installation, operation, maintenance, repair, and recovery of undersea fiber optic cables. The bill also authorizes NOAA to coordinate with other federal agencies on actions involving undersea fiber optic cables in national marine sanctuaries.
