ASSIST Act of 2025

To amend title 38, United States Code, to clarify that the Department of Veterans Affairs definition of ``medical services'' includes medically necessary automobile adaptations, and for other purposes.

Introduced May 13, 2025

Latest action (Mar 18, 2026) Committee on Veterans' Affairs. Ordered to be reported with an amendment in the nature of a substitute favorably.

Summary

This bill clarifies that the Department of Veterans Affairs definition of "medical services" includes medically necessary automobile adaptations for veterans with disabilities who need vehicle modifications to drive or ride as passengers. The bill specifies that covered adaptations include ramp and kneeling systems, raised doors or lowered floors, raised roofs, air conditioning, mobility lifts, accessibility modifications for entering and exiting vehicles, wheelchair tiedowns, and adapted seating. By explicitly listing these automobile adaptations as covered medical services, the bill ensures that disabled veterans can obtain VA support for vehicle modifications needed for safe transportation. The bill also extends the deadline for certain pension payment limits from November 30, 2031, to September 30, 2032. The bill makes clear that these vehicle modifications are part of the VA's medical services benefits for eligible veterans.
