Justice for Fallen Law Enforcement Act
To amend title 18, United States Code, to create or enhance penalties for murder and assault committed against a law enforcement officer, and for other purposes.
Summary
This bill amends federal criminal law to create or enhance penalties for crimes committed against law enforcement officers. The bill establishes a minimum 20-year prison sentence for assault against federal law enforcement officers, or state and local law enforcement officers if the perpetrator used an instrument of interstate commerce or a weapon that has traveled in interstate commerce, when the assault results in serious injury. The bill also creates a new federal offense specifically for the murder of law enforcement officers, with such murders to be prosecuted as first-degree murder under existing federal law. The bill requires the Attorney General to report to Congress within three years on the number and outcomes of prosecutions conducted under these new provisions.
