Summary

The CANS Act of 2026 requires the Secretary of the Interior to study how much aluminum is disposed of in landfills each year. The Secretary must report to Congress every three years starting three years after the law takes effect, detailing aluminum waste from industrial sites and the automotive industry. The reports must assess technologies for collecting and sorting aluminum and recommend policies to divert it from landfills and keep it in the domestic supply chain. The study will also examine aluminum exports, particularly to foreign countries of concern, and analyze how increased domestic recycling could reduce the United States' dependence on foreign aluminum sources and strengthen domestic manufacturing.
