Meeting Demand for Organic Produce Act
To amend the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990 to provide producers with the option to confirm the absence of prohibited substances through testing, and for other purposes.
Summary
This bill amends the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990 to allow organic producers to confirm the absence of prohibited substances in soil or growing media through testing. Rather than relying solely on the existing three-year history method, producers may now certify that growing medium has been tested prior to planting and confirmed to contain no prohibited substances or synthetic chemicals. This option applies to both conventional organic production and wild crop management. The Secretary of Agriculture must issue guidelines and criteria within 60 days of enactment to develop approved verification methods for testing that ensure accuracy and reliability. These testing methods provide an alternative pathway for organic producers to demonstrate compliance with organic standards.
