AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to requiring instruction on dating violence prevention and healthy relationships for students in grades seven through twelve
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem- bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. Section 804 of the education law is amended by adding a new 2 subdivision 5-a to read as follows: 3 5-a. Instruction regarding dating violence prevention and healthy 4 relationships that is age-appropriate shall be included in the health 5 education provided for students in grades seven through twelve. The 6 content of such instruction shall be developed with consideration given 7 to the recommendations of teachers, school administrators, and others 8 with educational expertise in the proposed instructional topics. Any 9 such instruction shall be taught by teachers holding a certificate to 10 teach health. The commissioner may prescribe in regulations such health 11 education courses which include instruction regarding dating violence 12 prevention and healthy relationships as the commissioner may deem neces- 13 sary and desirable for the welfare of pupils and the community. 14 § 2. This act shall take effect on the first of July next succeeding 15 the date on which it shall have become a law.
