Summary
New York Senate Resolution 2096 commemorates the 191st Anniversary of the neighborhood of Woodhaven in Queens to be celebrated on July 1, 2026. Woodhaven was founded on July 1, 1835, by John R. Pitkin as "Woodville" and renamed Woodhaven in 1853 to avoid confusion with another town, building on land that was previously inhabited by Native American tribes and then settled by early Dutch families. The neighborhood was significantly developed by Florian Grosjean, who in 1863 established the Lalance & Grosjean Manufacturing Company and built a company town with homes, churches, a park, and a library. Today, Woodhaven is a diverse Queens neighborhood of over 55,000 residents featuring Victorian and Colonial style homes, individually and family-owned businesses including historic establishments like Neir's Tavern and Schmidt's Candy, historic landmarks including St. Matthew's Episcopal Church and the Queens Public Library Woodhaven Branch, and Forest Park, founded in 1895, which features hiking and biking trails, historic carousel, and cultural events.
