Summary
This bill increases the penalty for knowingly violating New York's requirements that outdoor dogs be provided with appropriate shelter. Currently a violation subject to a fine of $50 to $250 depending on the offense, the bill reclassifies knowing violations as a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year of imprisonment, a fine of $500 to $1,000, or both. The bill also provides that starting 72 hours after someone is charged with violating the shelter provision, each day they fail to correct the deficiencies constitutes a separate offense.
