MACKENZIE, MOUL, ROAE, SCHEUREN, SMITH, STAATS, STEHR, STENDER, VEROBISH, VITALI, WALLEN AND WALSH, JULY 27, 2026 REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORTATION, JULY 27, 2026 AN ACT Designating the interchange of Interstate 81 with State Route 4007, known as Exit 119, on the border of Cass Township and Butler Township, Schuylkill County, as the PSP Trooper Michael E. Pahira, Jr. Memorial Interchange. The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania hereby enacts as follows: Section 1. PSP Trooper Michael E. Pahira, Jr. Memorial Interchange. (a) Findings.--The General Assembly finds and declares as follows: (1) Michael E. Pahira, Jr., was born February 10, 1982, in Ashland, Schuylkill County. (2) Trooper Pahira graduated from North Schuylkill High School in 2001 where he excelled in both the classroom and athletics, securing a district championship in wrestling. (4) Trooper Pahira enlisted with the Pennsylvania State Police in January 2007 and graduated with the 124th cadet class. (5) In 2007, Trooper Pahira was assigned to the patrol unit at Troop N in Lehighton, Carbon County. (6) In 2013, Trooper Pahira was transferred to Troop L in Schuylkill Haven, Schuylkill County. (7) In 2016, Trooper Pahira was transferred to Troop L in Frackville, Schuylkill County, where he served as a motor carrier inspector in the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit. (8) On July 1, 2026, Trooper Pahira tragically died from injuries sustained when he was struck by a tractor-trailer while performing a commercial vehicle safety inspection along Interstate 81 south at mile marker 119, in Cass Township, Schuylkill County. (9) Trooper Pahira is the 106th member of the Pennsylvania State Police who has died while in service to the Commonwealth. (b) Designation.--The interchange of Interstate 81 with State Route 4007, known as Exit 119, on the border of Cass Township and Butler Township, Schuylkill County, is designated as the PSP Trooper Michael E. Pahira, Jr. Memorial Interchange. (c) Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and maintain appropriate signs at the interchange displaying the name of the interchange. Section 2.
