Summary
New York S 10657 adds conflict of interest prohibitions to New York Public Officers Law by extending restrictions to spouses, domestic or romantic partners, household members, and immediate family members of state legislators. The bill prohibits these individuals from soliciting, negotiating for, accepting, or entering into agreements for compensation or financial benefits from any entity that has a matter pending before a state agency or local government within the legislator's district and may financially benefit from the legislator's official action, influence, or advocacy. The prohibitions apply to agreements made while the legislator is in office, regardless of when the compensation is actually provided. A violation can be cured if the financial benefit is fully returned or divested within 14 days after the legislator or family member knew or should have known of the prohibited interest. The bill takes effect immediately upon enactment.
