Summary
Michigan HB 4026 extends the sunset date on Michigan's exemption for firearm safety devices from the state use tax. The bill amends the Use Tax Act to continue the exemption for storage, use, or consumption of firearm safety devices, which includes devices installed on firearms to prevent unauthorized operation and secure storage containers such as gun safes, cases, and lockboxes. Sellers of firearms are required to provide written notice to purchasers and post a notice at points of sale stating that Michigan has exempted firearm safety devices from state sales and use tax. The exemption does not include glass-faced cabinets or other display storage primarily designed to show firearms. The legislature intends to annually appropriate sufficient funds from the state general fund to the school aid fund to compensate for any revenue loss resulting from this exemption.
