Summary
This resolution memorializes Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim October 2026 as Italian-American Heritage Month in New York. The resolution notes that more than 26 million Americans of Italian descent currently reside in the United States, making them the fifth-largest ethnic group in the nation, and that Italian-American Heritage Month was first celebrated in 1989 by a special proclamation of the United States Congress and former President George H.W. Bush. October was chosen as the designated month because it coincides with Columbus Day, the national holiday celebrated on the second Monday of October, and reflects the history of Italian immigration beginning in 1880 when approximately 5.5 million Italians immigrated to the United States between 1820 and 2004, with the greatest influx occurring between 1880 and 1920 when over 4 million arrived. The resolution acknowledges that Italian Americans have excelled in every career field including law, medicine, teaching, and the arts, and that they celebrate their heritage annually with festivals and parades, with the largest occurring in New York City on Columbus Day and attracting more than 35,000 marchers. A copy of the resolution is to be transmitted to Governor Hochul.
