Summary

This bill establishes a voluntary state seal of artistic achievement for New York high school graduates who demonstrate high proficiency in music, dance, theater, visual arts, or media arts. The seal is awarded by the commissioner and recognizes attainment of a high level of proficiency in these artistic areas. Criteria for earning the seal are established by the Board of Regents based on completion of arts coursework beyond regular high school requirements or hours in relevant extracurricular activities, and GPA and assessment scores are not used as criteria. The commissioner provides an insignia to be affixed to diplomas and transcripts of students who earn the seal, and participating school districts maintain records and place the insignia on qualifying students' documents. There is no charge to students for earning or receiving the seal.
