S 10539 NY
Relates to the application of New York state's human rights law to out-of-state employees
A state bill is a proposed law in a state legislature — separate from the U.S. Congress. Learn more →
Summary
This bill amends New York's Executive Law to extend state human rights protections to employees who work outside of New York State, as long as their employer maintains a physical address within New York. The law prohibits discrimination and harassment based on protected characteristics for these out-of-state employees. This applies to all employees regardless of where they physically perform their work, provided the employer has a New York State location. The change is particularly relevant for remote workers and telecommuting employees who may reside outside New York but work for employers based in the state. The bill takes effect immediately.
