Summary

Alaska HB 176, known as the Student Fee Transparency Act, requires the University of Alaska Board of Regents to notify enrolled students by email before imposing new mandatory fees or increasing existing mandatory fees. The notice must specify the amount of the fee or increase, the reason for it, and the purpose for which the university will use the revenue generated, and must be provided at least 30 days in advance when practicable. The bill defines mandatory fees as fees assessed to all enrolled students or all students at a specific campus, excluding course fees, matriculation fees, and parking permit fees. The bill also requires the University of Alaska to provide each enrolled student an itemized billing statement that breaks down all tuition and fees charged to the student. The law takes effect on July 1, 2027.
