Summary
Michigan SB 241 standardizes the commencement date for terms of village officers elected after December 31, 2024, requiring all such terms to begin at 12 noon on December 1 following the officer's election. The bill overrides any village charter provisions that previously allowed officer terms to commence after an election but before December 1, bringing all villages into alignment with a December 1 start date. The bill also specifies that individuals elected to fill vacancies cannot take the oath of office until the election results have been certified by the board of canvassers. The act was approved June 20, 2026, and became effective June 22, 2026, but only takes effect if related bills Senate Bill 240, House Bill 4358, and House Bill 4359 are also enacted into law. The bill applies to Michigan villages governed under the 1909 village incorporation law.
