A state bill is a proposed law in a state legislature — separate from the U.S. Congress. Learn more →
Summary
The bill expands New York's definition of "imitation weapon" to explicitly include air rifles, pellet guns, and BB guns. It raises the minimum age for purchasing paint pellet guns and other air guns from under 16 to under 18 years old and increases the civil penalty for violating these sales restrictions from $500 to $1,000 per violation. Gun industry members who manufacture, import, or sell imitation weapons must establish and use reasonable controls and procedures to prevent unlawful possession or sale. The bill prohibits gun industry members from knowingly creating conditions that endanger public safety through the sale or manufacturing of imitation weapons. People may keep air rifles, pellet guns, and BB guns that were lawfully acquired before the law takes effect.
