Summary
This Senate resolution commemorates the 192nd Anniversary of the Allen African Methodist Episcopal Church in Jamaica, New York in 2026. The resolution notes that the church was founded in 1834 with the original building constructed in 1842, and that it underwent significant expansion in 1869 and growth through migration from southern states. The resolution describes the church's history of resilience, including recovery from a devastating fire in 1944 that destroyed the sanctuary, construction of a new building in 1968, and recovery from a firebombing in 1969. The resolution notes that by the 1970s the church had grown to 1,200 members and expanded services for seniors, and identifies it today as the Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral of New York with Reverend Stephen A. Green as Senior Pastor since June 2024. The resolution also notes the church's partnership with Rock The Bells for a Juneteenth event on June 19, 2026, and directs that a copy be sent to the church.
