Summary

This New York bill, called Alexa and Lindsey's law, prohibits intentionally disabling vehicle safety features such as airbags, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning systems, and collision avoidance systems, and operating a motor vehicle with such features disabled on a public highway. Violating this prohibition is a class A misdemeanor. The bill also creates two new felony crimes: assault while operating a vehicle with disabled safety features (class D felony) when serious physical injury results, and manslaughter while operating a vehicle with disabled safety features (class C felony) when death results. When multiple people are harmed or killed as a result of disabled safety features in a single incident, courts may impose consecutive sentences rather than concurrent sentences.
