A state bill is a proposed law in a state legislature — separate from the U.S. Congress. Learn more →
Summary
This bill amends New York's mental hygiene law to add spina bifida to the list of conditions defined as developmental disabilities. Currently, the law defines developmental disability to include intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, neurological impairment, familial dysautonomia, and Prader-Willi syndrome. The bill expands this definition by adding spina bifida to the enumerated list. The change would take effect immediately upon enactment. This modification would make individuals with spina bifida eligible for services and protections under the mental hygiene law's provisions for people with developmental disabilities.
