Authorizes residential cooperative corporations to offer health insurance
A state bill is a proposed law in a state legislature — separate from the U.S. Congress. Learn more →
Summary
This bill authorizes residential cooperative corporations in New York to offer group health insurance to their shareholders and dependents. The cooperatives must have been in active existence for at least two years and cannot be formed solely for the purpose of obtaining insurance. Health insurance policies must be issued by an insurer authorized to provide accident and health insurance in the state. The bill clarifies that cooperatives sponsoring such coverage are not considered to be doing an insurance business themselves. The superintendent of financial services is directed to promulgate rules and regulations for implementation, including standards for solvency, nondiscrimination, disclosure, and reporting. The act takes effect 180 days after becoming law.
