AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to requiring community service by certain students
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem- bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. The education law is amended by adding a new section 819 to 2 read as follows: 3 § 819. Community service. The commissioner, in cooperation with the 4 board of regents, is authorized and directed to establish and develop a 5 requirement of community service for all secondary school students. All 6 secondary school students shall complete a minimum of eight community 7 service hours per academic year in grades nine through twelve. Thirty- 8 six hours of community service is necessary for a student to graduate. 9 § 2. This act shall take effect on the first of July next succeeding 10 the date on which it shall have become a law.
