To amend the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 to permit a State to include as part of the mail voter registration form a requirement that applicants provide proof of citizenship, and for other purposes.
Summary
This bill amends the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 to allow states to require proof of citizenship on mail voter registration forms. Currently, the National Voter Registration Act sets minimum standards for state voter registration procedures but does not specifically address citizenship proof requirements. This bill permits states to add a citizenship proof requirement to their mail registration forms as an additional criterion beyond what is specified in the Act. The bill also updates references in the Act from the Federal Election Commission to the Election Assistance Commission. The changes take effect upon enactment.
