S 2949 Introduced Re-checks Congress.gov for new actions and updates the bill's status, and fills in any sponsors, committees, or related bills that are missing. It does not re-pull sponsors/cosponsors/committees/related — those rarely change — and it skips all work if nothing has changed upstream, so it's cheap to click.
Ensuring Military Access to Higher Education Benefits Act of 2023
To require the Secretary of Defense to complete a data matching agreement with the Secretary of Education in order to ensure individuals who are current or former active-duty military service members or civilian employees and are otherwise eligible for assistance under the public service loan forgiveness program have their periods of employment automatically certified and counted towards the public service loan forgiveness program.
Summary
This bill would require the Secretary of Defense to enter into a data matching agreement with the Secretary of Education within one year to automatically certify military service and employment toward the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. Current and former active-duty military service members and Department of Defense civilian employees who are otherwise eligible for loan forgiveness would have their employment periods automatically counted, beginning from October 1, 2007. The automatic certification would streamline the process for military members to have their service recognized toward the loan forgiveness program's requirements.
