Summary

The Mortgage Relief for Disaster Survivors Act allows borrowers with federally backed mortgage loans in declared disaster areas to request a 180-day forbearance period during which they do not have to make loan payments. Borrowers may request forbearance by contacting their loan servicer and affirming they are experiencing financial hardship, and servicers are required to grant the forbearance regardless of the borrower's current payment status. Borrowers may extend the forbearance for additional 180-day periods and may discontinue it at any time, and no additional fees, penalties, or interest accrue during the forbearance period beyond what would normally be owed. The bill applies to disasters declared on or after January 1, 2025.
