S 1572 Introduced Re-checks Congress.gov for new actions and updates the bill's status, and fills in any sponsors, committees, or related bills that are missing. It does not re-pull sponsors/cosponsors/committees/related — those rarely change — and it skips all work if nothing has changed upstream, so it's cheap to click.
Federal Carjacking Enforcement Act
S. 1572 To amend title 18, United States Code, to improve the Federal carjacking statute.
Summary
The bill amends the federal carjacking statute to broaden the definition of carjacking from requiring intent to cause death or serious bodily harm to simply knowingly taking a motor vehicle. The bill increases penalties for carjacking to up to 25 years imprisonment if the vehicle is taken with intent to cause death or injury, or if a firearm is brandished or discharged during the carjacking, and serious bodily injury results. The bill maintains life imprisonment as the penalty if death results from carjacking where the vehicle was taken with intent to cause death or serious bodily harm. These changes make federal carjacking charges easier to prosecute while increasing penalties for carjacking involving weapons or resulting in serious injury or death.
