Recognizing the religious and historical significance of the festival of Diwali.
Summary
This resolution recognizes the religious and historical significance of Diwali, an annual festival celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and others, particularly within Indian-American communities. Diwali is described as a festival of lights in which celebrants light oil lamps and pray for health, knowledge, and peace, with each religious tradition holding different meanings for the celebration. For Hindus, Diwali represents the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. For Sikhs, it commemorates the release of Guru Hargobind from captivity. For Jains, it marks the attainment of Nirvana by Lord Mahavira. The resolution expresses respect for Indian-Americans and the Indian diaspora, acknowledges religious diversity, and supports the collaborative relationship between the United States and India.
