Summary

This resolution recognizes on Memorial Day the lack of voting representation in Congress for District of Columbia residents, including approximately 30,000 veterans. The resolution provides historical data on the military service and casualties of DC residents, noting that almost 200,000 DC residents have served in the military since World War I and that DC casualty figures exceeded those of several states in various wars. The resolution affirms that DC residents have earned voting representation and full local self-government. The resolution recognizes that active duty servicemembers, National Guard members, reservists, veterans, and their families who are DC residents deserve passage of the Washington, D.C. Admission Act for statehood.
