Quindaro Townsite National Historic Landmark Act
To designate the Quindaro Townsite National Historic Landmark, and for other purposes.
Summary
This bill designates the Quindaro Townsite in Kansas City, Kansas as a National Historic Landmark. The Quindaro Townsite was founded in 1857 to support the Free-State movement during the struggle over whether Kansas would enter the Union as a free or slave state, and it served as a safe entry point for people opposed to slavery and as a station on the Underground Railroad. The bill authorizes the Secretary of the Interior to work with the State of Kansas and Kansas City to enter into cooperative agreements to protect historic resources at the site and provide educational and interpretive facilities and programs to the public, and to offer technical and financial assistance for these purposes. The designation does not restrict property owners' actions regarding their property or change how the site is administered by local and state governments.
