IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

Mr. Perry introduced the following bill; which was referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs

A BILL

To prohibit United States recognition of the claims of sovereignty of South Ossetia or Abkhazia within the Republic of Georgia.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

This Act may be cited as the “Republic of Georgia Sovereignty Act”.

SEC. 2. PROHIBITION AGAINST UNITED STATES RECOGNITION OF THE CLAIMS OF SOVEREIGNTY OF SOUTH OSSETIA OR ABKHAZIA WITHIN THE REPUBLIC OF GEORGIA.

(a) Statement of Policy.—It is the policy of the United States not to recognize the claims of sovereignty of the following areas within the Republic of Georgia:

(1) South Ossetia.

(2) Abkhazia.

(b) Prohibition.—In accordance with subsection (a), no Federal department or agency may take any action or extend any assistance that implies recognition of the claims of sovereignty of South Ossetia or Abkhazia within the Republic of Georgia, or any other closely related successor entities. <all>
