Ms. Pettersen introduced the following bill; which was referred to the Committee on the Judiciary

A BILL

To amend the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 to provide that grants under the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program may be used for gun safe giveaway programs, and for other purposes.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

This Act may be cited as the “Community Firearm Safety Act of 2026”.

SEC. 2. GUN SAFE GIVEAWAY PROGRAMS AUTHORIZED UNDER BYRNE GRANTS.

Section 501(a)(1) of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 (34 U.S.C. 10152(a)(1)) is amended by adding at the end the following:

“(J) Programs to provide gun safes (or other devices that are designed to be or can be used to store a firearm and that are designed to be unlocked only by means of a key, a combination, or other similar means) to individuals, at no cost to the individuals.”. <all>
