Summary

This bill expands Medicare coverage to include HIV prevention services furnished by pharmacists, effective January 1, 2027. The covered services include pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), medication administration, and counseling, consultation, screening, and clinical diagnostic laboratory tests related to HIV prevention interventions, provided the pharmacist is legally authorized to furnish these services under state law. Medicare will pay 80 percent of the lesser of the actual charge or 85 percent of the amount determined under the physician payment basis for the same services. The bill prohibits pharmacists from balance billing Medicare beneficiaries, meaning they cannot charge patients more than the Medicare-approved amount. This coverage expansion allows Medicare beneficiaries to access HIV prevention services from pharmacists in addition to physicians.
