Protecting Supplemental Security Income for Disaster Victims Act
To amend title XVI of the Social Security Act to ensure stability in payments to Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries.
Summary
The bill amends the Supplemental Security Income program to disregard certain settlement payments when determining eligibility and benefit amounts. Specifically, the bill excludes from income calculations any amounts received in settlement of personal injury, property damage, or property depreciation claims, including settlements from the East Palestine train derailment case. The bill also excludes these settlement amounts from resource calculations for the month of receipt and every month thereafter. The amendments apply retroactively to the East Palestine settlement, meaning benefits paid before enactment can be adjusted if affected by the disregard.
