Break Free From Domestic Violence Act
To provide additional housing protections for survivors of domestic violence, and for other purposes.
Summary
This bill would amend the Violence Against Women Act to prohibit landlords from charging early lease termination fees to tenants in federally assisted housing who need to leave their leases due to being victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking. Tenants would be permitted to exit their leases early based on such victimization without incurring financial penalties. The prohibition would apply to housing assisted under covered housing programs administered under the Violence Against Women Act.
