Summary
This bill directs the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to update Department directives within 18 months regarding emergency management of acute sexual assault for covered veterans (those exhibiting symptoms within 72 hours of assault). The directives must include provisions for offering prophylaxis treatment for sexually transmitted disease and pregnancy, mental health counseling or referrals, and guidance for police regarding notification of local law enforcement while balancing confidentiality. The bill requires annual training for VA employees and police officers on the updated directives, using trauma-informed curricula and provided in-person at least once every five years. The bill establishes oversight requirements for Veteran Integrated Service Network directors to monitor compliance and identify barriers to implementation.
