Summary

The Department of War Restoration Act of 2025 redesignates the Department of Defense as the Department of War. The head of the agency, currently called the Secretary of Defense, would be redesignated as the Secretary of War. The bill provides that all existing references to the Department of Defense or the Secretary of Defense in current laws, rules, regulations, and official documents automatically apply to the new names of the Department of War and the Secretary of War. This is primarily a naming change that applies retroactively to all existing legal and regulatory references.
