Ms. Norton introduced the following bill; which was referred to the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform

A BILL

To require the commanding general of the District of Columbia National Guard to reside in the District of Columbia.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

This Act may be cited as the “District of Columbia National Guard Commanding General Residency Act”.

SEC. 2. REQUIRING COMMANDING GENERAL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA NATIONAL GUARD RESIDE IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.

(a) Requirement.—Section 7 of the Act entitled “An Act to provide for the organization of the militia of the District of Columbia, and for other purposes”, approved March 1, 1889 (sec. 49-301, D.C. Official Code), is amended by adding at the end the following new subsection:

“(d) The Commanding General of the District of Columbia National Guard shall reside in the District of Columbia.”.

(b) Effective Date.—The amendment made by subsection (a) shall take effect on the day that is one year after the date of the enactment of this Act. <all>
