Undetectable Firearms Modernization Act
To modernize the Undetectable Firearms Act of 1988.
Summary
This bill would update the 1988 Undetectable Firearms Act by modernizing how "undetectable" firearms are defined under federal law. Currently, the law references an outdated "Security Exemplar" standard and specific x-ray machines; this bill would replace that with a definition based on whether a firearm contains sufficient detectable material equivalent in magnetic strength to 3.7 ounces of stainless steel. It would also update references to airport security screening to reflect modern detection technology and clarify that major firearm components include the slide, frame, receiver, and barrel. The bill includes exemptions for firearms in government possession and those manufactured under contract with the U.S. government.
