To authorize the Secretary of Health and Human Services, acting through the Administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration, to award grants for expanding, modernizing, or streamlining emergency department operations.
Summary
This bill establishes a federal grant program to help nonprofit hospitals expand, modernize, and streamline their emergency department operations. The Health Resources and Services Administration would award grants of up to $500,000 to nonprofit health care providers that already operate emergency departments. Grant funds may be used to hire and retain emergency department staff, modernize and optimize ED capacity through renovation or equipment purchases, improve patient flow through new processes, and provide training to existing staff on triage and patient care. The program authorizes $20 million annually from fiscal year 2026 through 2030. The Secretary of Health and Human Services must report to Congress on the program's effectiveness and impacts by the end of the third fiscal year after enactment.
